20110711 Porcupine Mountains State Park, MI

In the last leg of our 6 night July 2011 trip, we stayed 4 nights at Porcupine Mountains State Park in the upper peninsula (UP) of Michigan (aka … The Porkies). We booked 6 months ahead to get a site directly on Lake Superior. At only steps to the shale shoreline, we had breathtaking views.

Site 18The campground was very well maintained with clean separate ‘unisex’ showers that were the best we have seen at a state park. The UP is sparsely populated in general and the miles and miles of state and federal parks in the area offer entire hikes without other company. The main attraction in the Porkies is the Lake of the Clouds that is easily viewed from an extensive boardwalk trail, as well as from several other far more rugged trails.

Lake of the CloudsBeyond outdoor activities, there isn’t much to do in the area … which was perfect for us. However, we did take several drives in the area and stopped at a few local restaurants, including Syl’s Cafe in Ontonagon, Randall’s in Wakefield (yes, they are on facebook!), and the Library in Houghton. We stopped at Syl’s and Randalls for the local specialty (and my family’s favorite) the PASTIES. We highly recommend both.

The Library is also a microbrew, so I opted for the Lake Superior whitefish and we left with a growler of beer that we used to wash down our cheese curds from a shop in Wisconsin. Growler and CheesecurdsOverall, a great time was had and I would highly recommend the Union Bay Campground for a few nights in da Yoopers. That said, if you can’t get a spot on the water, your experience may be different from ours as the remaining sites are rather open and a tad cramped with hit or miss views of either your neighbor or maybe a sliver of the lake.

Amenities: Electricity, fire pit, table, individual shower rooms
Site: 18 – see campground map
Would we stay here again? ABSOLUTELY!

20110709 Hartman Creek State Park, WI

As the first leg of our 6 night trip, we stopped for two nights at Hartman Creek State Park in Waupaka, WI. The park has several small ponds and lakes with a swimming beach. About half of the sites have electricity. The shower facilities are older with only two showers per bathhouse. The rangers are very visible and managed to enforce the quiet hours really well for the number of people staying here during this “at capacity” summer weekend. The sites are quite tight (mainly tents and the largest number of popups we have seen at any park) and we felt on top of our neighbors (or more like they were on top of us, especially when the kids started feeding the gophers … Hint for them if they read this … DO NOT feed wildlife in a campground, especially not when you are feeding them 5 feet from your neighbor’s picnic table… Good grief!)

Hartman Creek Site 76

Amenities: Electricity (some), fire pit, table, showers (older, but with plenty of hot water)
Site: 76 – see campground map
Would we stay here again? Doubt it, but maybe in the spring or fall?

Rain has held off (50% chance is a weatherman CYA … Can never be wrong) at our 2 night trip to the local Kankakee River State Park. Likely this will only be a last minute / short stay option for us given the close proximity to home, but rather rustic amenities (and bugs … have likely greatly increased our cancer risk with all the bug spray we gave inhaled). Otherwise, good hubster / wife walking along the river trails and bonding ;)

Amenities: Electric, fire pit, table
Would we stay here again? Yes
Site: 17 in Hawthorn Loop at Potawatomi Campground (see map)

p.s. Note Kate’s grill in action … Awesome!
